Seven Seems To Be A Lucky Number For Digital Camera Price Cuts

Digital Cameras & Camcorders | Dec 10, 08

In a holiday season of discounts, it seems seven megapixel digital cameras are being targeted for particularly deep price cuts.
Perhaps its because cameras of ten megapixel resolution or greater have become far more affordable over the last year, and of course the soft retail market is depressing consumer technology prices in general (see for example “Weak Retail Sales, Lower Oil Take The Gas Out Of GPS Prices” and “A "Sharper" Drop In LCD Television Prices”). But for whatever reason, seven megapixel digital camera prices are dropping like a stone. As noted in our recent press release, the PriceSCAN 7 Megapixel Digital Camera Index fell 4.5% in the week prior to Black Friday. This contrasts with a six percent decline from September 1 to the week before Black Friday.
And those declines are continuing. Consider for example the Sony CyberShot DSC-S750, currently the most popular 7 megapixel model on this site. It’s currently offered for under $110, a discount of $40 from its price in March.

Similarly, the Canon PowerShot A470 (the second most sought-after 7 megapixel camera on PriceSCAN) has dropped from $130 back in mid-February to les than $90 as of this writing.

Of course, as noted above, there are digicams out there with much higher resolution. But seven megapixels is probably quite sufficient for casual shutterbugs. And in the depths of a recession, many gift recipients will be thrilled if their camera Santa shows up at all, even with something less than “state of the art” in his bag.
